Stuff I Wish I’d Known BEFORE I Went to Law School

  1. Hey! Good luck to you! I am about to begin my 2nd semester of law school and I am 40 w/ 2 small kids! It is hard than I ever imagined it could be and WAY more rewarding!!
Whatever you do – DO NOT listen to those who tell you to relax and not read law stuff over the summer – BIG MISTAKE!! I wish I had prepared better for the classes I was about to take. Read some of the hornbooks or supplments you’ll definitely use during finals prep (Crunchtime is my fav cause it has flow charts). It will help you understand better when you hit that horrible realization come Oct. 1st or so that your Profs (while brilliant) really arent there to teach you anything – you need to learn much of it on your own. That was a HARD lesson for me to learn and it took me a long time to recover. I truly think my grades suffered at least 1/2 pt because of that.
I also suggest having ALL outlines done by end of Thanksgiving weekend. I wish to heavens that had been me. Then you have weeks just to memorize and take practice exams! I never had time to do enough practice exams and I feel that was also a problem for me. Those in my class that followed the outlines done by end of Nov and taking tons of practice exams have received best in class grades so far!!
Also, please have really great child care set up for yourself if possible BEFORE you begin. My nanny quit in the summer before school started and my mom said she would help. Right around midterms she quit and I had to search for a nanny!!! Awful! Plus, if possible, have someone to help with bedtimes, homework, etc. for the kids because many nights that will delay your studying until VERY late!! Many nights I began studying at 9:00 or 10:00!!! :(
Good luck to you! I look forward to hearing how it goes! Cngrats on the improvement on your score – good for you for taking it again. I got same 1st score and jsut couldnt take it again!!! :)

  2. Angie, thanks for your comment and advice! I am pretty nervous about starting law school, but I am determined to do it. :) Fortunately I have a supportive (usually–haha) husband who will really be taking up the slack with the kids. Hopefully child care won’t be an issue.

I know law school will be long and hard, but I am telling myself … 1 semester at a time, and at my age, 3 years is not very long. LOL

    Thanks again for visiting!

  3. You are soo right – I did that last semester everytime I got freaked out that I didnt think I could keep up the pace for 3 yrs but I would say outloud – not 3 years, 3 months or 3 hrs or whatever!! And my motto was/is: You can always sleep later!! Being a mom, that was by far the hardest part – still wanting to stay connected to the family but needing to work so hard so I would give up sleep!!
You can totally do it – hell, we’ve had kids – that’s the hardest thing in the world to do!!! :)
